Blacksmithing Equipment Auction!


SOFA was asked to help publicize an upcoming auction in Shipshewana, IN because of the large quantity of blacksmithing equipment in this auction. They have over 25 anvils, a few very large bridge anvils (one 1335lbs!), and alot of leg vices, cones, swage blocks, etc. in this auction. It’s the evening of 19 Jan. You can bid in person or on-line. The link below gives details, pictures, etc.

There is live bidding for this auction or people can come and be in our audience. There’s no buyer premium for in-house buyers who pay with cash or check!

Forged Candlestick Class :: Nov 11


In this one day class taught by blacksmith Roy Adams, we will cover the techniques it takes to forge steel pipe. This will include tapering, twisting, and flaring pipe. We will be forging the pipe for use as a candlestick. Alternatively, these same concepts can be used to forge pipe to create a steel vase. Candlesticks will make a wonderful centerpiece for your holiday meals. Basic forging skills required.

HANS PEOT :: June 4, 1931 ~ July 14, 2017 (age 86)


86, of New Carlisle, Ohio, passed away Friday, July 14, 2017. Hans was born June 4, 1931 in Spokane, Washington. He was a USAF veteran and retired from Wright Patterson Air Force Base as Asst Director of the B-1 program. Hans was an artist-blacksmith and toolmaker, and a long-time member of SOFA (Southern Ohio Forge and Anvil). He is survived by his wife, Kathleen; a son, Mark Peot (wife, Dr. Lydia Chang); a daughter, Margaret Ann Peot (husband Daniel Levy); grandchildren, Samuel Levy, Elena Peot and Eric Peot; two sisters, Margaret Cassens, Anna Walker; nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo & Catherine (Harder) Peot; two brothers; Leo & Peter Peot; and a sister, Catherine Hufmann Gordon. A memorial service will be held at 2 PM, July 22, 2017 at the TROSTEL, CHAPMAN, DUNBAR & FRALEY FUNERAL HOME, New Carlisle, Ohio. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Grace Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
