Welcome to SOFA, Creative and Friendly!

Southern Ohio Forge and Anvil (SOFA), an affiliate of ABANA, is a nonprofit organization that was formed in 1977. Its founders, Emmert Studebaker, Larry Wood, and Bob Zeller were inspired by ABANA and former Ohio Artists Blacksmith Association to create an organization to preserve and promote the art of blacksmithing.

Informational and educational activities include workshops, demonstrations, and communications. We have a large library of videotaped demonstrations, newsletters, and various blacksmith publications, which are available for loan to any member, free of charge.

We look forward to seeing you at our monthly meetings or Wednesday night open-forging (Fall, Winter, and Spring).

Peter Brunner from Austria is one of our demonstraters at this year's Quad State. Peter is coming in to dayton on the 11th of September and will be going home on the 27th. He is wanting to visit  with other smiths and forge in there shops. Check him out on face book. I have made arrangements for him to stay at the Studebaker homestead as a back up or I'm hoping for maybe a gathering or two. So if you are interested in having Peter as a guest and visit with you in your shop let me know. Brian Thompson  (937) 422-3283 or
