American Bladesmithing Society: Introduction to Bladesmithing (2-Week Course)

Aug 23rd – Sept 3rd

Certified by the American Bladesmith Society (ABS) and taught by ABS Master Smiths, this two week course is designed for anyone (beginners to experienced metal workers) who is interested in learning how to make high quality forged blades. Each day will include both lecture and hands-on time with an hour break for lunch. Lecture topics will include metal/material selection, blade function and blade design. Hands on time will include forging metal to shape, normalizing, heat treating, grinding and tempering. These semi-finished blades will then be tested for their cutting ability, edge holding, hardness and flexibility.

While handles and guards are not a part of this course they may be discussed.

Successful completion of this course will reduce the required 3 year waiting period to a 2 year wait as an ABS Apprentice member for eligibility to submit their knives for ABS Journeyman Smith judging.

Class with run Monday through Thursday the first week (Aug 23 – 26) & Monday through Friday the second week (Aug 30 – Sept 3).

The Mid America Bladesmithing Symposium will be held Aug 27 – 29 at our location as well.  It is a separate cost to attend.  Please click on the link for more details.

Cost for the course is $850 plus $20 for a Southern Ohio Forge & Anvil membership.  A 50% deposit is required to reserve a spot in the course.

Instructors:

Kevin Cashen – With a lifetime devoted to the research and study of the history, science and methods of forged blades, Kevin Cashen is one of the most respected experts in his field on many aspects of his craft.  Because of this, his services as an instructor are much in demand.  Kevin has been an American Bladesmith Society approved instructor for over 20 years, and has taught classes ranging from intro to bladesmithing, for beginners, to blade metallurgy, for master instructors, at locations that include local events, international symposiums and colleges and universities.

His research efforts, which include outfitting his home facility with a complete line up of metallurgical lab equipment, has earned him a reputation of the foremost authority on the science of creating blades and their heat treatment.

The vast number of his bladesmithing colleagues, and even clients in other related industries, who rely upon his recommendations, keeps him much in demand as a consultant with many speaking and demonstration engagements throughout the year.

Steve Dunn – Steve began making knives as a hobby in 1988 and in 1990 he enrolled in the basic forging class at the ABS school in Washington, Arkansas where he started forging his own Damascus steel. Steve progressed quickly through the apprentice, journeyman and in 1994 he reached the level of Master Bladesmith in the American Bladesmith Society and began teaching at the ABS knife-making school as a Master Smith. Finally in 2003 Steve was selected to serve on the ABS Board of Directors.

Steve has always strongly believed in sole authorship in his knives. In 2002, he enrolled in a basic engraving class at GRS Tools in Emporia Kansas. He later studied with Chris DeCamillus on Bulino style engraving. He was asked to be an instructor at the GRS School in 2005.
